‘The ‘Specimens’ by Michael Mapes created in the expanse between studio and laboratory are comprised of hundreds of dissected photographs and fragments of ‘personal/biographical DNA’ (such as hair, fingernails, tears, calender dates and geographical references) contained in various forms. The selection and composition of the specimens is the basis for a more complex study within a kind of scientific-sculptural-collage. The encased specimens suggest various narratives, including the nature of captivity and transcendence and the passing of time.
