Folding

Words

Using photography, found imagery, sculpture and collage to create pictures and objects that suggest something tangible behind the surface of a photograph, Eli Craven explores the role of images in processes of socialization.

He gathers imagery from collected magazines, books and his own personal history, and with a delicate blend of humor and melancholy they are reconfigured to interrogate the ostensible values of the original. In his project ‘Folding’, images are carefully folded into themselves concealing and transforming the original. The folds hide focal information while drawing the viewer’s attention to secondary gesture, movement and form. Conventional scenes of joy, sadness and romance take on new readings with faceless, ambiguous and often sexualized forms. This simple yet powerful act of folding becomes an exploration in the potential for new meaning through subtraction.
