Massachusetts-based artist Jennifer Maestre creates unique and vibrant pencil sculptures. To make them, she first cuts hundreds of pencils into 1-inch sections and drills a hole into each of the sections to transform them into beads. Then, she sharpens the sections and sews them together. Maestre’s creations are inspired by animals, plants and mythology among other things. In a statement about her work, she says: “My sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. The spines of the urchin, so dangerous yet beautiful, serve as an explicit warning against contact… The sections of pencils present aspects of sharp and smooth for two very different textural and aesthetic experiences.”
