A Concrete Seaside Retreat By Rose + Partners

Words

On a seaside slope in Chilmark, Massachusetts sit six concrete prefabs designed by architects Peter Rose + Partners. The residential retreat was built to be in harmony with its surroundings, with gaps between each unit amplifying the sounds of waves and sea breezes. In response to the potential threat of erosion posed by coastal bluff, the units’ floors were cast in rugged concrete to match their exterior. The modular prefabs can be moved and re-installed in a matter of weeks should the climate prove too challenging. Rose worked in collaboration with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh to develop the project, stating “the way this house is kind of settled in [the landscape] was entirely intentional from the beginning.”
