Flurina Rothenberger Shifts The Lens On Life Across Africa

Swiss-based, Ivory Coast-born photographer Flurina Rothenberger travelled throughout the African continent to capture the diversity, creativity and exuberance of its everyday street life. The photos she took are gathered in her book ‘I love to dress like I am coming from somewhere and I have a place to go’. From Morocco to Madagascar, Rothenberger sought to provide a counterpoint to the Western media’s typical portrayal of Africa. “Differing issues such as fashion or conflict pop up in the same manner, often overly enthusiastic or downbeat,” she said. “Both hold the sticky feel of outdated exotic. My portrayal of Africa is a modest personal selection of everyday life, glimpses that can not possibly reflect the huge diversity of such a vast continent.”
