Studio Swine converted plastic trash from the ocean floor into a collection of luxurious design objects to highlight the issue of global ocean pollution.
Entitled ‘Gyrecraft‘, the project involved the collection of sea plastic from the world’s main ocean gyres, spanning 1000 nautical miles, which was melted in a machine using solar energy. The melted material was then crafted into a set of luxury objects, each representing the respective ocean gyre in which they were found. Speaking of the intention behind the project, the studio said, “‘Gyrecraft’ is an exploration into maritime crafts which exists in every coastal or island culture around the world each with its own unique identity, utilizing what the sea provides.”
