English photographer Jo Broughton plays on voyeurism and fantasy with her candy-toned documentary series ‘Empty Porn Sets’.
Broughton captured the images while working as a cleaner at a porn studio, a job she took to fund her photographic studies at London’s Royal College of Art. In a play on lost innocence, the images’ popping color tones initially evoke childhood play sets, but a closer look reveals the tell-tale symbols of their true purpose. Speaking of the series’ context, Broughton explains, “As a cleaner I saw the sets in the cold light of day and picking up and cleaning the mess was a bit like being in a crime scene […] In the end, though, I was learning my craft, trying to understand light and how to photograph really well.”
