A Meditation On Life In American Mountain Towns
- Words
- Anna Dorothea Ker
American photographer Bryan Schutmaat captured life in small mountain towns and mining communities for his series ‘Grays the Mountain Sends’.
Inspired by poetry of Richard Hugo, Schutmaat visited a variety of towns across the American West, spending time with locals and shooting portraits, still lifes and landscapes on a large-format camera. In a statement about his work, Schutmaat says, “I’ve aimed to hint at narratives and relay the experiences of strangers met in settings that spur my own emotions. Ultimately, this body of work is a meditation on small town life, the landscape, and more importantly, the inner landscapes of common men.”
