In his ‘Orientation’ series, photographer Matthew J Brown captures the in-between moments on campus at East Tennessee State University.
Taken during his three-year stint as a photographer, editor and director of the university newspaper, Orientation explores the spaces, structures and artifacts of higher education in the United States. Speaking of the intention behind his work, Brown states, “The photographs form a loose narrative based on the orientation process used by the administration to familiarize new students with the campus…Employees adapt their work spaces to better reflect their own personality as well as more closely resemble their living environments. In a similar fashion, I approach anonymous and ubiquitous spaces with a specific perspective that humanizes the subject matter.”
