An Exploration Of Constructed Femininity

Adopting the persona of a character named Joyce, British photographer Juno Calypso’s performative series sheds a critical gaze on the labored construction of femininity.
Bearing titles such as ’12 Reasons You’re Tired All The Time’, ‘Disenchanted Simulation’ and ‘A Modern Hallucination’, the series of candy-toned images challenges the ‘modern rituals of seduction’ with the help of props once considered progressive, such as 1980s computer equipment and tinned cold meat. A statement about the series reads: ‘Joyce appears alone, consumed by artifice. Her glazed appearance acting as a mirror to the exhaustion felt whilst bearing the dead weight of constructed femininity.’
