London-based photographer Nicholas Worley establishes through his pictures a connection between gypsum the mineral and the town of Gypsum in Colorado.
“The Gypsum set captures the subtlety of the varied geometries during the winter period, exposing Colorado’s natural monochrome palette with subtle shades of earth.”The series of pictures shows mountains in the Gypsum municipality, which received its name due to the discovery of large amounts of gypsum around 1905. It’s a soft sulphate mineral which has been used by sculptors in the ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Roman and Byzantine empires. Nowadays gypsum is used all over the world as a core component of drywall. Worley’s high-contrast pictures convey the rawness and purity of Colorado’s winter landscape. Speaking of the series, the photographer says: “The Gypsum set captures the subtlety of the varied geometries during the winter period, exposing Colorado’s natural monochrome palette with subtle shades of earth.”
