For his project ‘Carbonato Apuano’, photographer Andrea Foligni took a series of images of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany to draw attention to the area’s environmental changes caused by calcium carbonate extraction.
By placing minimal landscape photographs next to images of mountains made from various materials, such as toothpaste, pharmaceuticals, ceramics and plastics, Foligni aims to raise the awareness of the high amount of calcium carbonate being extracted and used in everyday products.
In a statement about the project, Foligni says: “This place is a symbol of environmental critical issues of our country and I think we need long-term strategies, oriented to sustainable activities, to start a different trend, otherwise the problem will be resolved only when the mountain will be completely erased.”
