Ceaselessly finding the inspiration in the contrasts surrounding her, the designer Hannakaisa Pekkala won this year’s Northern Lighting with her project, ‘Symmetry’. Minimalistic in style yet visually strong, ‘Symmetry’ is a series of three sculptural pendant lamps that come in different basic shapes: square, circle and diamond. The lamp is made of the metal wire with a fabric cord and depending on a bulb, it can give a general light or shine downwards. The graphic expression of ‘Symmetry’ makes it an eye-catching and outstanding object that could become a central part of any interior.

I had been thinking of a graphic and modern version of a statement lamp like a chandelier. I wanted it to be something eye-catching and contemporary to fit in a modern interior. I kept sketching circles, diamonds and squares together and wanted to combine them into one. Then I realized that the lamp could consist of separate parts, which together would make a sculptural piece. That’s how Symmetry was born.”
