Living and working in London, photographer Cian Oba-Smith creates soft-colored documentary photographs that reveal the honest side of life in the northern part of England’s capital.
In his project ‘Andover & Six Acres‘, Oba-Smith focuses on the cultural diversity of the estates of the same name; an area he says has been known as a hotbed for drugs, violence, and prostitution, particularly throughout the ’80s and ’90s. The stigma surrounding this district is still evident today, manufactured through years of negative media coverage. Exploring the residents and their surrounding with a more empathetic lens, the photographer aimed to uncover the present-day reality of the estates. Oba-Smith’s documentation comprises not only candid and interesting portraits; his images catch the light with a poetic sensibility, capturing dreamy landscapes and abstract architecture shots.
