Patrick Shearn Floated A Liquid Shard Over An LA Square

Words

The Los Angeles-based artist Patrick Shearn hung a ‘liquid shard’ above the city’s Pershing Square. Created in collaboration with Now Art LA and installed by art collective Poetic Kinetics as one in a series of temporary outdoor installations, the 15,000-square feet wide public sculpture rises from 15 to 115 feet above ground level. Made from holographic mylar and monofilament, the sculpture oscillates gently in the wind, creating a glittering silver wave reminiscent of a time-lapse video. The inspiration behind the project, explains Shearn, “comes from observing nature and the feeling that we are only aware on a very surface level of what is really going on around us […] I wanted to play in that realm with this technology I have been developing.”
