The artwork “Yellow Shirt” of the Cairo based photographer and filmmaker Owise Abuzaid shows interesting compositions in the streets of Cairo using a yellow shirt as an eye-catching element.
The artist never leaves his house without the yellow shirt which he considers to be a second self. He uses the shirt to reflect his presence and document significant events like a bygone car accident, his uncle’s funeral or his cousin`s wedding. However it all started as a hunt for interesting compositions in the streets of Cairo using a simple object to draw attention to. Abuzaid`s series evoke a scenario he grew up with in Africa. There was always one article in his parent’s closet he uses in his art as an historical allusion. The medium of photography explains the importance of visual narrative in recounting events as substitute to the oral storytelling tradition.
