The work of product designer Harry Thaler is shaped by his years as a skilled goldsmith and craftsman. Originally from Meran, Thaler has lived and worked in London, Vienna and Sri Lanka: amongst this experience, his practice arises from a consistent passion for functionality, simplicity and innovation.
To present a glimpse behind the scenes of Thaler’s work and processes, we collaborated with Meraner Land to visit the designer in his South Tyrol studio tower, which overlooks the region’s mountains and rural landscape. From this industrial hub of exposed concrete and minimal decoration, Thaler works alongside his team to produce fresh takes on industrial and interior design, reinventing objects to new modes of elegance and clarity. Perhaps his most renowned product is the Pressed Chair, the success of which he attributes to his skills in goldsmithery: this light, stackable element of furniture is pressed from a 2.5mm sheet of aluminum. Today, Thaler continues to evolve the possibilities of furniture and domestic objects, amongst widening his artistic scope to include architectural projects: exciting work in progress is the construction planning of a local pharmacy.
