Around the majestic gnarled trunk of a centenarian oak tree is ‘ORIGIN tree house’ — a wooden cabin designed by French architecture firm Atelier Lavit in the forest of Chateau de Raray.

The tree house, though made from wood, bears little in common with the trees that surround it. Foregoing organic woodland forms, the designers have created a geometric building that bulges from the tree: its design a contemporary interpretation of a messy birds nest. The octagonal floor plan cleverly organizes space around the oak’s trunk which has been left bare: its untreated form the clear heart of the home. The furniture has been designed to mimic the geometric nature of the building’s exterior; the light-filled interior is lined with poplar that has been worked into all necessary home accoutrements with fine horizontal slats as detailing. As with all true tree houses, you enter this one via a ladder — and on its roof, you’ll find a terrace space that offers a panoramic view of the forest.
