Danish design company Kvadrat has collaborated with Benjamin Hubert from Layer to produce ‘Shift’, a new shelving system made from recycled materials.

Premiering at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, ‘Shift’ is a flexible storage system which also doubles as an acoustic wall panel. Kvadrat approached several designers asking them to create new furniture pieces from end-of-life textile. ‘Shift’ was created using materials from Kvadrat and Really’s ‘Solid Textile Board’. The shelving system looks like a normal wall panel until you peel back the outer layers, revealing different shelving options underneath. The panels are supported with accompanying pop out brackets enabling users to place objects safely onto the system. Hubert explains that ‘Shift’ “celebrates the power of transformation, in this case, from shelf to acoustic wall panel and back again”. When the shelves are not in use, the panels can be folded back up, attaching to magnets inside the system, meaning that ‘Shift’ can be altered without the fuss of screws or bolts.
