French photographer Clément Chapillon’s documentary work ‘Welcome To Jordan’ captures the rugged terrain and intriguing beauty of Jordanian villages and deserts.
A drive through the sovereign Arab Kingdom of Jordan has been heralded as one of the world’s best road trips—Jordan is a Middle Eastern country rich with dry desert scenery, grand rock formations, and vast open spaces with sprawling roads and ancient monuments. After several long-term trips to Jordan, Israel and Palestine, the photographer began visually documenting his time in each country, exploring the link between the people and the land, as well as the deep complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Chapillon got to know local communities in Jordan on a personal level, photographing individuals and animals on the side of the road, as well as produce stalls set up on the edge of the Dead Sea, Jordan’s picturesque salt lake. The photographer’s background in communications combined with his passion for travel, photography, and meeting inhabitants of the land, allows him to tell compelling stories with absorbing images.
