Stefan Berg Paints Canada’s Contemporary Urban Landscape

Stefan Berg’s paintings draw from both observation and memory, documenting domestic scenes and the contemporary urban landscape of his home in Canada.

Currently based between Toronto and Bruce County in Ontario, Berg’s work gives permanence to moments or subjects that are specific to his experience of these spaces. He finds beauty in the commonplace, painting architectural landscapes and interiors without embellishing or enhancing their aesthetics. The apartment complexes that sit beyond his studio feature regularly in his work, their looming banality rendered as beautiful by his brush. He often paints these en plein air, from the roof of his studio—the challenge of capturing moving light and shadow is evidently something he has mastered.
