Identity becomes collective in Osamu Yokonami’s ongoing project ‘Assembly’: a photographic series where, silhouetted against spectacular landscapes, women move as echoes of one another.
The Tokyo-based photographer’s ongoing series has many iterations, each featuring “collective portraits” of women wearing the same clothing. By photographing these identically dressed characters, often captured whilst moving in unison, Yokonami erases their individuality. By documenting them from a distance, “The existence of each person disappeared, and the existence of the group appeared instead”, he explains. The placement of the identical characters has a rhythmic repetition that is both eerie and beautiful.
