Henrietta Harris Evokes Loneliness In Her Melancholic Landscapes

Last year, New Zealand artist Henrietta Harris undertook an artist residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland. There, she painted a collection of moody, pastel landscapes as a reaction to the environment around her, for a series titled ‘Hidden People’.
Skagaströnd is a small village with a population of 500, situated four hour’s drive from the capital Reykjavík. The title of the series refers to the fact that no humans are present in her works, unlike Harris’ previous experience in portraiture. These latest works comprise watercolor and oil paintings of stormy skies, snow-capped mountains, and peach colored sunsets. There is an atmospheric and almost tumultuous nature to Harris’ work, where empty roads and foggy peaks imbue the viewer with a feeling of solemnity. The paintings below are part of the exhibition ‘Hidden People’, on display at Auckland’s Melanie Roger Gallery until March 23rd, 2019.
