Berlin-based collective 97cm has designed a series of limited edition chairs titled ‘Juxtaposition’. The pieces reinvent the iconic 1950s Eames Plastic Chairs, transforming an everyday furniture item into a pair of sculptural objects.

As the title suggests, the chairs juxtapose “art and furniture, old and new, mass production and craftsmanship, and immateriality and gravity”, explains a statement from 97cm. Taking cues from the materiality and form of the now ubiquitous Ray and Charles Eames design, 97cm questions the relationship between mass-produced goods and highly individual custom-designs. “‘Juxtaposition’ thus connects industrial production and determinism with the volatility and open-endedness of the artist’s craft”, they said. The textured chairs were shot by Berlin-based photographer Alexander Kilian. For further information on how to purchase, click here.
