The land art installations depicted by Japanese artist Yoshiki Hase in the perplexing series ‘181°’ consist of images of geometric, material objects inserted into expansive landscapes.
The conceptual series portrays different shapes made from fabric, contrasted against dramatic backdrops in largely undefined locations. “By placing objects into these physical spaces, the onlooker intermittently experiences peculiar instances of visual harmony”, Hase tells IGNANT. “It’s here that an entirely new scenery emerges from the cross-section of will and nature”. Clarifying the intention behind the title and concept, Hase explains: “If 180° represents that entirely clear, unobstructed horizon, by adding ‘something’—an intent—I’ve added just 1°.”
