A Concert Hall Built From Crushed Brick

“The visual effect achieved is that of a natural object, a rock.”To optimize the hall’s acoustics, Menis employed a technique he termed ‘picado’ – involving the mixing of concrete and crushed brick – to create the geometrically faceted interior. Peeking out from behind the red ‘picado’-clad exterior is a light concrete facade. Speaking of the intention behind the design, Menis says, “While the concert hall’s outer skin remains rigid, inside, the building acts like a fluid that brings together the different functions, its many different co-existing elements, slowly combining them and playing off each other […] The visual effect achieved is that of a natural object, a rock.”
