The Sci-Fi Face of Belgrade’s Brutalist Buildings

Often described as Socialist Modernist or Brutalist, the colossal concrete buildings appear proudly against the dreamy blue sky. Photographed in an abstract way, they seem to be taken from another galaxy or a retro sci-fi movie. Not without a reason, the series is also nicknamed by Mirko the ‘Star Wars City’. He describes: “The main characteristic of all these astonishing edifices is they will always look not just futuristic, but as if they were taken from the future and brought to us.”

Although the buildings may remind of the monuments standing alone in remote places, some of them are not so still and majestic in a real life. “The most challenging buildings to photograph were the ones that people have ruined with ugly commercial billboards, so I had to remove them with Photoshop,” says Nahmijas. Inspired by the former Yugoslavian architecture, the photographer is planning to expand his portfolio with the project depicting other brutalist buildings.
