Juergen Teller is an artist who needs no introduction – one of the world’s most sought-after contemporary photographers, he has pursued his own vision of popular culture, becoming a cult figure himself.
Straddling the interface of fine art and commercial photography, Teller constantly resists the urge to idealise, romanticise or prettify his subjects, revealing the core of their imperfect beauty instead. Although his compositions often convey a sense of the incidental at first, it becomes clear that they are have been very carefully conceptualized and composed upon closer inspection. Photographing super models, celebrities and pop-stars, Teller places them in uncommon and disturbing contexts, challenging the viewer’s expectations surrounding popular culture and reshaping them according to his own distinctive vision. A recently opened exhibition ‘Enjoy Your Life!’ in The Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, Germany, offers a chance to have a closer look at Teller’s works and understand his artistic legacy. Closing on September 25th, the show will then be then shown in a different configurations at the Rudolfinum in Prague and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin.
