A Lighthouse Among The Dunes

Surrounded by the fantastic dune landscape on the northwest coast of Denmark, the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse suffered serious damage back in 1968. This Spring, after a refurbishment by BESSARDs’ STUDIO and JAJA Architects, it offers a scenic staircase and is topped by a wind-powered kaleidoscope.
Situated on the edge of the rapidly eroding cliff, the lighthouse provides a magnificent view of the dynamic dune landscape. It was estimated that – due to shifting sands and erosions in the region – the building will eventually fall into the sea in 2023. Therefore, it might be one of the last chances to visit the architectural structure and marvel at the nature surrounding it. Indeed, climbing the scenographic stairway is an architectural experience itself. However, at the top of the lighthouse there’s something even more remarkable waiting for the visitors – a gigantic wind-powered kaleidoscope. Relating to the building’s original function, it captures natural light and reflections, sending it inwards to create an ever-changing cascade of colors and shapes of the nearby landscapes.
