An Immersive Rainbow Light Installation

For the the 2016 Bristol Biennale, Manchester-based artist Liz West created a site-specific installation in the form of a rainbow tunnel allowing visitors to bask in the glow of the full color spectrum.

Entitled ‘Our Color’, the exhibition sees the transformation of architectural space into a light show created from theatre gels, playing with the viewer’s emotional response to various hues and challenging their sense of perception. “I observe that after moving through the space – walking, running, dancing – and experiencing every colour, people often go back to the colour they find most comfortable,” explains West. “They will then stand, sit or lay there for some time to reflect.” The work is part of the artist’s ongoing project, ‘Your Color Perception’, through which she explores humans’ emotional relationship to color.
