The Alpine Cabin By OFIS

In collaboration with various structural engineers, they developed a self-contained wooden shell with a cantilevered form to resist extreme weather conditions on its exposed site on the mountain. The tiny cabin is made from a mixture of cross-laminated timber, glass and aluminium panels, and has a surface of 9.7 square-metre. Inside, the timber-lined cabin features three resting platforms that face towards the valley through a large panoramic window. The winter cabin owns a compact wooden volume, providing accommodation for up to nine mountaineers to shelter from the harsh and extreme weather conditions of wind, snow and landslides. Only accessible by climbing or helicopter, this unusual site was chosen because of its 360-degree views over Slovenia and Italy. The aim of the project is to gain new knowledge through unexpected weather conditions.
