Henrique de França lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil. In this series of pencil drawings, de França meditates on the physical and mental state of ‘Torpor’.

In each image of ‘Torpor’, artist de França pulls a visual sense of lethargy and idleness into the process of his work. He utilises negative space to allude to quiet interactions between characters and their environment, creating small scale drawings on 40x60cm sheets of paper. His sparse sketches of figures, their shadows, water and small odes to the landscape offer scenes of everyday life through passive eyes. Through this, de França speaks of a familiarity with the environment he depicts, presenting a wander through peaceful urban life in a state of mental hibernation.
