In Ontario’s Blue Mountains, Atelier Kastelic Buffey has drawn together traditional form and contemporary comfort in their design of ‘Alta Chalet’ — a holiday home for a family of five.
The exterior of this building draws heavily from the historic Blue Mountain barns of the area — but inside, there is little about the space that is traditional. Floor to ceiling windows offer vistas of snowbanks in winter, and light wood and marble fittings cut clean lines throughout the white space. Split across two levels, this duo-tone home boasts a living space of over three thousand feet. Atelier Kastelic Buffey explains that the home was, “designed with a delicate sensitivity to the scale of its neighboring houses. The black volume stands boldly in contrast to the snow while the white references the winter program. Alta Chalet communicates an ethos of contemporary design and elegant detailing that derives from the local vernacular tradition of the barn.”
