Australian architecture firm Edition Office has created the ‘Hawthorn House’, a present but pared-back concrete home situated in the suburbs of Melbourne.
Lead architects Aaron Roberts and Kim Brigland treat architecture as a “tool for amplification”; and in the ‘Hawthorn House’ they have created a space that emphasizes elements of the suburban site by acting against them. The board-marked concrete structure sits heavily on the land, its form distinct from its green surroundings. Whilst the upper level of this home is enclosed in concrete, the ground floor opens directly to the outdoors via a continuous glass front that wraps around three of its four sides. Here, the board-marked concrete exterior acts as a protective shell, framing arced vistas of the yard. Rather than design a building that merges with the landscape, Edition Office has created a structure that offers a unique mixture of tension and harmony between nature and architecture.
