Japanese architect Tadao Ando has facilitated the execution of ‘Casa Wabi’: a boutique beach house and artist residency situated on the sunny Oaxacan coast of Mexico.

Ando brought together a collaboration of eight architects to conceive of six freestanding residences clustered around the main central complex. The floor plan is laid out to resemble a mammoth compass, with a 312-meter-long concrete wall running east to west that acts as a framework for the residency. The wall follows the coastline, providing multiple zones where the six freestanding residences run off, these buildings house studios, exhibition spaces, and bedrooms. ‘Casa Wabi’ is located a short drive from Puerto Escondido, the laid back port town in the very south of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Puerto Escondido is known for its famed pipeline surf break at Zicatela’s exposed beach, and its thatched-roof bars filled with traveling backpackers. Those seeking refuge from excited travellers and crashing waves may find solace in the inspiring, multicultural environment provided by ‘Casa Wabi’, where artists are invited to engage in a “meditative community filled with introspection and connection”.
