Contrasting Textures And Materials Are Central To The Interior Of Acne Studios In Nagoya

For the interior design of the renowned Swedish clothing brand’s store in Nagoya, the architects have looked to the concept of balancing chaos with order as inspiration. Resembling a cave-like structure, the retail space is uniquely shaped and follows a long, curved layout with large glass panels that look onto the streets of Nagoya. Inside, the color palette is predominantly monochromatic, with material elements continually contrasting one another throughout, balancing roughness with delicateness, and chaos with order. Vast, irregularly-shaped stainless steel partitions serve as the furniture to hang items of clothing. The panels appear as heavy and industrial but here they are delicate like paper and cut with precision. The ceiling, a defining feature of the minimalist space that the architects describe as “providing a sort of dystopian organized chaos,” is left purposefully exposed, revealing a mixture of tangled cables, structural support, and bespoke lighting fixtures designed by Benoit Lalloz. A bespoke custom-made wool carpet opposes the abundant industrial materials—purposefully rough in appearance yet soft in texture.
