Archway Studios

Words

Surrounded by the artifacts of an industrial London, with fragments of bridges, viaducts and rail tracks, Undercurrent Architects created ‘Archway Studios’, a live-workspace built in and around a 19th century rail viaduct.

The unique design composed of high arches and bowed walls subverts tight site conditions, transforming a narrow plot with limited light access into an illuminated interior with lofted spaces. A spiral staircase allows access to three stacked levels and partitioned spaces. The white interior stands in contrast to the worn wood and metal facade, forming an acoustic double-skin wall to shield the sounds of trains.
