The Design collaboration Eboarch by Yon Ju Lee and Brian Brush from New York created a playful object out of 400 simple wooden chairs, that deals with the question of how we see and experience the architectural world around us. The chairs repose itself as a fundamental architectural event. It formalizes the transformation of chairs from useable objects into structural and spatial components of an ambiguously edifice.

Born in East Lansing, Michigan and now living in Seattle, Washington, Dan Webb creates amazing sculptures out of wood. With their detailed texture and shape his works show off the beauty in the grain of the wood.

8. IMPLEMENTS BY JESSICA DRENK
Jessica Drenk creates sculptures out of pencils. Each sculpture uses between 1,200 and 4,000 of them. After being glued together, the sculptures are sanded with a belt sander and other power tools, before being finished by hand.

7. MATCHSTICKMEN BY WOLFGANG STILLER
German artist Wolfgang Stiller created the ‘Matchstickmen’ out of thick pieces of lumber that he places standing or lying in the room. The faces are all different and meant to look as if they simply emerged in the wood after burning each flammable tip.

6. HUMAN SCULPTURES BY BRUNO WALPOTH
Bruno Walpoth creates intriguing human sculptures made of wood. The textural imperfections of the sculptures give a figurative spirit to the trees from which it came. Walpoth uses semi-translucent paint to coat his works, ensuring that the wood grains stay visible

By combining sculptural knowledge and technical skills with contemporary issues Mario Dilitz manages to to create sculptures of great intensity and appeal. His sculptures, most of them life-sized, are made of high quality laminated wood. After a process of destruction and reconstructing the wood gains a new form of stability.

4. ONE-TO-ONE BY CAROLINE SLOTTE
Caroline Slotte created the series ‘One-to-One’, featuring a set of objects that are supposed to look like two things at once or rather two materials at once. We simultaneously recognize the objects as plastic, metal or paper and wood— an impossibility that plays with our perception.

For his series ‘Spaghetti Bench’ Pablo Reinoso took public benches of anonymous design as a starting point for his reflection. These benches cross cultures and have something of the out-of-time and out-of-date about them. Check them all here.

2. SCULPTURES BY WILLY VERGINER
The sculptures and installations of Willy Verginer are estranged and introduce the viewer to a whole new dimension of magic suspension. Verginer develops an original and unique visual language that combines painting with the art of sculpting. Beginning with traditional wood work as it is practiced in his hometown, Bressaone, he slowly detached himself from conventional schemes and began following his own style.

Italian sculptor Aron Demetz is our number one. He explores the human figure with his wooden sculptures and shows incredible skills in carving wood. He uses the material to highlight the harmony as well as the conflicts between man and nature. We are especially intrigued by the contrast between the smoothly carved figures and the harshly treated surfaces.
