Chasing Light
“Chasing Light” by Gabriella Sturchio: “Since birth, my twin sister Bianca and I have simultaneously struggled with challenges from cerebral palsy and illness, as well as our inherent social identities as twins. Millions of individuals experience varying degrees of identity challenges due to siblinghood as well as health-related ailments. This is often done in silence, sometimes in shame, and often without adequate support. While watching her continually face adversity, biased marginalization, and isolation, I started questioning socially constructed belief and value systems around themes of identity, disability, and sickness. I am curious about my privilege and guilt associated with “good” health. My explorations aim to engage people of varying ability who find themselves outside socio-normative molds, who relate to challenges regarding physical ability, and social and self-identity, specifically within the context of sisterhood.”
