James Needham was struck by how empty largely populated cities could often appear. In contrast to their reputation for being loud and bustling metropolises, Needham began to notice areas that lay deserted: the quiet, isolated spaces people traveled through, rather than to. Utilizing the bright and saturated style of urban landscape painters such as Edward Hoper and Jeffery Smart, Needham set out to photograph moments of isolation the inhabitants of crowded cities could often find themselves in during the day.
